UMFS Scholarship Fund Information
For The Giving Sack Website
UMFS is a social services agency whose mission is to be an unwavering champion for high-risk children and families, collaborating with communities to help them reach their full potential. Many of the children UMFS serves are in foster care. UMFS strives to help them overcome challenging circumstances and succeed.
The UMFS Scholarship Fund is one of the many ways the agency helps foster teens and other high-risk children reach their full potential. Since its creation in the 1970s, the UMFS Scholarship Fund has provided financial aid to hundreds of children in foster care to help them continue their education after high school. The fund provides assistance for students attending accredited post-secondary or vocational education and training institutions.
In 2018, the fund provided scholarships for eight students, including Mark Smith. Mark had a rough childhood, which included the imprisonment of his father and the death of his mother. He entered foster care at age nine, and he moved between several foster families and a residential facility before he became part of UMFS’ treatment foster care program in 2014. With the support of UMFS and his new foster family, Mark started to heal. He caught up in school and started making the honor roll. In fall 2017, Mark became the first person in his family to go to college. Learn more about Mark’s journey at https://www.umfs.org/mark-smith-creating-bright-future/.
